Fruit plantation in West Jutland
At Ringkøbing close to the North Sea, our fruit and berry orchard started in 1981.
Development in the orchard
At Ringkøbing close to the North Sea, our fruit and berry orchard started in 1981.
We started with blackcurrants, elderberries, apples, blueberries and currants. For a period of time almost all the fruit has been gone.
In 2013 we decided to start again with apples, pears, plums, elderberries, raspberries and walnuts. The planting of trees started in 2014. We work with both organic and conventional production,
Today there are 6ha of apples, 1ha of pears and smaller pieces with plums, elderberries, raspberries. And 7 ha with walnuts
The fruit plantation supplies fruit to Vesterhavsmost, which processes and develops products from the fruit.
All our products are made from fruit grown in our own apple orchard. The apple plantation is right next to the monastery and Laubjergs Planteskole & Rose Garden.
The apples in the orchard
We have 15 different apple varieties in the field. The main production consists of 10 varieties and the last varieties are specialties that are used for small apple must productions.
The varieties are: Cox Holstein, Discovery, Elstar, Fillippa, Pirouette Rubenstep, Rosette, Red Aroma, Red Ingrid Marie, Santana, Sunrose. Sweet 16, Topaz, Red Pineapple, James Grieve and Zari.
The western location close to the North Sea gives more flavor in the apples. The large temperature fluctuations that are close to the North Sea give good acidity in the fruit, which is the basis for the taste.
Aarhus University has proven the truth in our claim about our fruit, which is tastier. The salty air also means that we have fewer fungal problems than many other places. It blows more and it causes the leaves to dry up faster and dry leaves and shoots are not so easily attacked by fungal diseases.
