Filippa originally comes from Hundstrup in South Funen, and the variety has been known in Denmark since 1889. Filippa is a healthy and hardy variety, well-suited for the sandy soil of West Jutland. It is a variety that we will plant more of in the coming years.
We have 500 Filippa trees in the orchard, and it is an incredibly healthy apple tree, which doesn't yield a huge harvest – but the taste is all its own. Filippa apples are often picked a little before they are ripe, as they tend to fall off easily otherwise. Therefore, we ripen them for a few days in boxes until they have just the right taste.
Filippa is a fresh and tart cooking apple, and the light juice smells of pineapple and tastes like grandma's apple pie on a warm September day years ago. For some, it is the preferred apple all day due to its strong apple flavor, while for others it is a bit too much.
